The First Martyr of the Church | St. Stephen (Dec 26)

About This Prayer

St. Stephen stands at the very beginning of Christian martyrdom — the first to give his life for Jesus Christ after the Resurrection. Chosen as one of the Church’s first deacons, Stephen was filled with the Holy Spirit and known for his wisdom, compassion, and powerful preaching. When he boldly proclaimed that Jesus was the promised Messiah, opposition quickly turned to rage. Dragged before the authorities, Stephen fearlessly testified to the truth of the Gospel, even as false witnesses accused him. As stones were hurled toward him, Stephen looked to heaven and saw Christ standing at the right hand of the Father. With his final breath, he echoed the mercy of Jesus Himself: “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” His death marked the beginning of Christian martyrdom — and his forgiveness planted seeds of conversion, including in the heart of a young man named Saul, who would later become St. Paul. St. Stephen reminds us that authentic faith is courageous, forgiving, and rooted in love — even in the face of death. St. Stephen, pray for us.
