Saint Junípero Serra left behind a successful academic career in Spain to become one of the greatest missionaries in North America. Despite constant pain and hardship, he founded nine California missions, preached the Gospel to thousands, defended the dignity of Native peoples, and helped establish the Catholic faith throughout the American West. His life reminds us that true missionaries never count the cost when souls are at stake.
