St. Ursula and Companions
Wednesday, October 21, 2026
Saint Ursula and her companions are remembered among Christianity's most remarkable virgin martyrs, whose courage and fidelity to Christ inspired generations of Catholics. According to ancient tradition, Ursula was a young British princess who traveled through Europe on a pilgrimage with a company of Christian women devoted to lives of purity and faith. Their journey brought them to Cologne, Germany, where they encountered invading Huns. When ordered to abandon their Christian faith and chastity, Ursula and her companions refused. They chose martyrdom rather than betray their devotion to Jesus Christ. Tradition speaks of hundreds or even thousands of women who died alongside Ursula, although the precise historical details remain uncertain and have become intertwined with legend. Their witness inspired centuries of devotion, and Cologne became home to an important shrine honoring these martyrs. Saint Ursula also became the patroness of the Ursuline tradition, which would later dedicate itself to the Christian education of young women. Saint Ursula and her companions remind us that true courage is remaining faithful to Christ even when the world demands compromise.
