Daily reflections on the lives of the saints
St. Wilfrid of York
Monday, October 12, 2026
Saint Wilfrid of York was a seventh-century English bishop whose determination to defend Church unity brought him into conflict with powerful rulers and fellow churchmen. Born into nobility in Northumbria, Wilfrid became a monk and traveled to Rome, where he developed a profound attachment to Roman liturgical customs and ecclesiastical tradition. At the Synod of Whitby in 664, Wilfrid became a leading advocate for adopting Roman practices, particularly the calculation of Easter, helping bring greater unity to the English Church. His convictions repeatedly brought opposition, political struggles, and exile. Yet Wilfrid continued preaching, establishing churches, and evangelizing communities throughout England. Saint Wilfrid reminds us that fidelity to the Church sometimes requires sacrifice, perseverance, and the courage to stand firm when compromise would be easier. ad89b4ee-0a19-4154-9abc-e7f1759… Subscribe to Catholic Voices and Prayers for more powerful stories of the saints and the Catholic faith.
