St. The Rosary and the Miracle That Saved Christian Europe
Wednesday, October 7, 2026
The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary commemorates one of the most dramatic moments in Catholic history—the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. As Christian forces prepared to confront the Ottoman fleet, Pope Saint Pius V called Catholics throughout Europe to pray the Rosary for victory. Against daunting odds, the Christian fleet prevailed. In thanksgiving, Pope Pius V established a feast honoring Our Lady of Victory, which later became known as Our Lady of the Rosary. But the Rosary is far more than a prayer associated with one historic battle. It is a meditation on the life of Jesus Christ through the mysteries of His Incarnation, ministry, Passion, death, and Resurrection—prayed in union with His Mother. Our Lady of the Rosary reminds us that the Rosary is ultimately about Christ, drawing us deeper into His life through prayer and contemplation. 08af2be3-3b0e-475f-bc13-173f2f4… Subscribe to Catholic Voices and Prayers for more powerful Catholic feast days, saints, and devotions.
