Daily reflections on the lives of the saints
St. John of Capistrano
Friday, October 23, 2026
Saint John of Capistrano was a fearless Franciscan preacher whose extraordinary courage earned him the title “Soldier Saint.” Born in Italy in 1386, John began his career as a lawyer and governor before a profound conversion led him to abandon worldly ambitions and enter the Franciscan Order. He traveled throughout Europe preaching repentance, defending the Catholic faith, and inspiring thousands to return to Christ. But his greatest challenge came in 1456, when Ottoman forces threatened Christian Europe. At nearly 70 years old, John accompanied Christian troops defending Belgrade, raising the Cross and encouraging soldiers through prayer, preaching, and unwavering faith. The remarkable Christian victory at the Siege of Belgrade became one of the most celebrated events of his life. Exhausted by his efforts, John died shortly afterward, leaving behind a legacy of extraordinary missionary zeal and courage. Saint John of Capistrano reminds us that holiness is not always quiet or hidden. Sometimes God calls us to stand boldly for the faith, even when the odds seem impossible.
