St. The Nun Who Built Catholic Schools on the American Frontier
Saturday, October 3, 2026
Saint Théodore Guérin left France with five religious sisters and crossed the Atlantic to bring Catholic education to the American frontier. In 1840, they arrived in the wilderness of Indiana, facing poverty, sickness, primitive conditions, and anti-Catholic hostility. Yet Mother Théodore refused to abandon the mission God had entrusted to her. From those difficult beginnings came schools, orphanages, and the motherhouse at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Despite opposition and misunderstanding—even from within the Church—she continued forward with remarkable courage and trust in Divine Providence. Saint Théodore Guérin reminds us that one faithful person who completely trusts God can leave a spiritual legacy that transforms generations. f2ecae19-134a-4e35-b76f-f593b0c… Subscribe to Catholic Voices and Prayers for more powerful stories of the saints and the Catholic faith.
