St. Anthony Mary Claret
Saturday, October 24, 2026
Saint Anthony Mary Claret was a fearless missionary, archbishop, and founder of the Claretians whose extraordinary zeal for souls transformed countless lives. Born in Spain in 1807, Anthony began as the son of a weaver before answering God's call to the priesthood. His powerful preaching and missionary spirit led him to establish the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, known today as the Claretians. As Archbishop of Santiago, Cuba, he worked tirelessly to reform the clergy, establish schools, defend the poor, and bring people back to the Catholic faith. His fearless defense of justice and morality made him powerful enemies. He even survived an assassination attempt, yet refused to abandon his mission. Saint Anthony Mary Claret famously declared: “A son of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is a man on fire with love.” His life reminds us that genuine love for Christ cannot remain passive. It must inspire us to serve others, proclaim the Gospel, and courageously defend the faith.
