Saint Stephen of Hungary was the nation's first Christian king and a ruler who dedicated his reign to establishing the Catholic faith throughout his kingdom. Crowned around the year 1000, Stephen built churches, established dioceses, supported the poor, and sought to govern according to Christian principles of justice and mercy. He taught his son, Saint Emeric, that humility and faith mattered more than earthly power. Before his death, Stephen entrusted Hungary to the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Nearly a thousand years later, he remains the country's patron saint and one of the great Catholic rulers of European history. Saint Stephen reminds us that political authority reaches its highest purpose when it is placed at the service of God and the common good.
