Daily reflections on the lives of the saints
St. Eusebius of Vercelli
Sunday, August 2, 2026
Saint Eusebius of Vercelli was a courageous fourth-century bishop who defended the divinity of Jesus Christ when Arianism threatened to overwhelm the Church. When Emperor Constantius pressured bishops to accept false teaching, Eusebius refused. He endured arrest, scourging, and years of exile rather than compromise the Catholic faith. After returning to his diocese, he worked tirelessly to restore orthodox teaching and renew the spiritual life of his clergy. His life reminds us that authentic shepherds protect the truth even when political power demands silence or surrender.
