Saint Bernard of Clairvaux was one of the towering figures of medieval Catholicism—a Cistercian monk, mystic, preacher, abbot, and Doctor of the Church whose influence reached monasteries, kings, and popes. At only 22, Bernard entered the Cistercian Order accompanied by dozens of relatives and friends. He later became abbot of Clairvaux, where his holiness and preaching inspired countless men to embrace religious life. Bernard wrote profoundly about love of God, humility, and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. His influence extended far beyond the monastery: rulers sought his counsel, and he helped restore unity during a papal schism. Saint Bernard reminds us that a life withdrawn from worldly ambition can still exert an extraordinary influence upon the world when it is completely centered on Jesus Christ.
