Daily reflections on the lives of the saints
St. Francis Borgia
Saturday, October 10, 2026
Saint Francis Borgia was a wealthy Spanish nobleman, Duke of Gandía, and trusted courtier to Emperor Charles V. But one encounter with death changed the course of his life forever. While accompanying the funeral procession of Empress Isabella, Francis witnessed the decay of the once-beautiful empress and realized how quickly earthly power, beauty, and prestige disappear. He resolved never again to serve a master who could die. After his wife's death, Francis surrendered his wealth and titles to enter the Society of Jesus. He eventually became the third Superior General of the Jesuits, expanding their missionary work and strengthening the young religious order. Saint Francis Borgia reminds us that worldly success means nothing compared to the eternal treasure of serving Jesus Christ. 01d5c8ae-73ce-4a90-a272-bbb036c… Subscribe to Catholic Voices and Prayers for more powerful stories of the saints and the Catholic faith.
