St. Who Barely Slept and Changed the Church
Monday, October 19, 2026
Saint Peter of Alcántara was a sixteenth-century Franciscan friar whose extraordinary life of prayer, fasting, and penance helped bring spiritual renewal to the Catholic Church. Born in Spain in 1499, Peter entered the Franciscan Order as a young man and embraced an exceptionally austere way of life. He slept very little, fasted frequently, and devoted long hours to prayer and contemplation. His holiness inspired a reform movement within the Franciscans, encouraging a return to poverty, simplicity, and deep spiritual discipline. Despite his severe personal penances, Peter was remembered for his gentleness, humility, and charity toward others. He also became an important spiritual supporter of Saint Teresa of Ávila, who admired his holiness and credited his prayers with helping her reform the Carmelite Order. Saint Peter of Alcántara reminds us that genuine reform in the Church begins not with power or influence, but with personal holiness, sacrifice, and complete surrender to God.
