The Great Eastern Schism of 1054 AD marked the tragic split between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. Rooted in centuries of political and theological tensions, the division came to a head when Patriarch Michael Cerularius and Pope Leo IX excommunicated each other over disputes about Church authority, liturgical practices, and the Filioque clause in the Nicene Creed. This moment formally separated East and West — Rome and Constantinople — into two distinct branches of Christianity. Yet both continue to share the same Apostolic faith and valid sacraments.
