If God Knows Everything, Why Pray for Others?
Description
If Almighty God already knows everything, why should Catholics pray for other people? Do our prayers actually make a difference? The Catholic Church teaches that intercessory prayer is both meaningful and powerful. Jesus Christ is the one Mediator between God and man, yet Sacred Scripture repeatedly shows people approaching Our Lord on behalf of others. Jairus pleaded for his dying daughter. The Roman centurion asked Christ to heal his servant. And Jesus responded to their faith. God does not need our prayers to discover what someone needs. But in His divine providence, He invites us to participate in His work through prayer. This also explains why Catholics ask the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints to intercede for us. Catholics worship God alone. Asking Mary or the saints for their prayers is not worship. It is an expression of the Communion of Saints. And that communion extends beyond death. Catholics also pray for the faithful departed, especially the souls in Purgatory, asking God to bring them into the fullness of Heaven. Christian charity does not end at the grave. We remain united in Jesus Christ. Pray for your family. Pray for your friends. Pray for the souls in Purgatory. And never underestimate the spiritual importance of praying for one another.
