When Is a Mass Invalid or Illicit

When does a Novus Ordo Mass become invalid, and what is the difference between an invalid Mass and an illicit one? A valid Mass requires a validly ordained priest, valid matter, the essential sacramental form, and the intention to do what the Church does. If one of these essentials is missing, no valid consecration takes place. An illicit Mass may still be valid, meaning Jesus Christ truly becomes present, while also violating the liturgical laws of the Church. Poor music, weak preaching, or an irreverent atmosphere do not automatically invalidate the Eucharist. However, validity should never be used as an excuse for liturgical abuse or a lack of reverence.
