What is grace and why do we need it?

What is grace, and why is it necessary for salvation? Grace is the free gift of God’s own divine life within the soul. It heals the wounds of original sin, strengthens the will, enlightens the mind, and enables us to perform supernatural acts of faith, hope, and charity. God offers grace freely, but He does not force us to accept it. Catholics are called to cooperate with grace through prayer, obedience, the Sacraments, and perseverance. Without grace, we cannot reach Heaven. Through grace, sinners can become saints.
