Could Your Confession Actually Be Invalid?

Can a Catholic Confession be invalid? A person must honestly confess all mortal sins remembered after a careful examination of conscience. Deliberately concealing a mortal sin can invalidate the Confession because the penitent is intentionally withholding serious sin from the Sacrament. Genuine contrition and a sincere purpose of amendment are also necessary. This does not mean promising never to fall again, but it does require a real intention to turn away from sin. Importantly, genuinely forgetting a mortal sin is not the same as intentionally hiding one. God’s mercy is unlimited, but Confession requires honesty, repentance, and a sincere heart.
