Is Eating Too Much Actually a Sin?
Description
Is overeating actually sinful? It can be—but the Catholic understanding of gluttony goes deeper than simply enjoying a large meal. Food is a gift from God. The problem arises when our appetite becomes disordered and begins controlling us rather than being governed by reason and virtue. The answer is temperance: enjoying God's gifts with gratitude, moderation, and self-control. This also helps explain the ancient Catholic discipline of fasting. By voluntarily denying ourselves something good, we train our appetites rather than allowing our appetites to rule us. And an important distinction: overeating does not automatically equal mortal sin. Mortal sin requires grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent. The Catholic goal isn't to fear food. It's to possess the freedom to enjoy God's gifts without becoming enslaved to them.
