Are Exorcisms Actually Real? The Catholic Answer

Core Catholic Doctrine2:03

Description

Are demonic possession and exorcisms actually real? Yes—and the Catholic Church still performs major exorcisms today. Jesus Christ gave His Apostles authority over demons, and the Church continues to exercise that ministry under carefully controlled circumstances. A priest cannot simply decide to perform a solemn exorcism. He must receive specific authorization from his bishop, and the Church requires careful investigation, including consideration of possible medical and psychological explanations. But Catholics shouldn't become obsessed with extraordinary demonic activity. Possession is extraordinary. Temptation is ordinary. The ordinary Catholic response to spiritual warfare is a life centered upon Jesus Christ: Confession, the Eucharist, prayer, the Rosary, holy water, blessed sacramentals, the Saint Michael Prayer, and remaining in a state of grace. The devil is a creature. Jesus Christ is Lord.
