Why can't a Catholic simply divorce and marry someone else? Jesus speaks directly about divorce and remarriage in the Gospel. Catholicism therefore teaches that a valid sacramental marriage is not merely a legal contract—it is a lifelong covenant established before God. A civil divorce may sometimes be tolerated or necessary for serious reasons, including protecting legal rights or the welfare of a spouse and children. But civil divorce by itself does not dissolve the matrimonial bond or make someone free to remarry. And an annulment is not a Catholic divorce. A declaration of nullity means the Church has determined that a valid marriage was never established in the first place.
