Does being Catholic mean accepting absolutely everything a pope says? No—but the answer requires an important distinction. Catholics recognize the unique authority Christ entrusted to Saint Peter and his successors. But papal infallibility does not apply to every papal statement, interview, prudential judgment, or disciplinary decision. The Church recognizes different levels of Magisterial authority and corresponding levels of assent. That does not give Catholics permission to dismiss Church teaching whenever they disagree with it. Nor does legitimate criticism justify contempt for the pope or rejection of the papacy. Catholic obedience must remain rooted in Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium. Saint Paul even records opposing Saint Peter “to his face” when Peter's conduct caused scandal—without rejecting Peter's apostolic authority. The answer is neither rebellion nor blind obedience. Know the Catholic Faith. Respect legitimate authority. Remain faithful to what Christ entrusted to His Church.
